Gran Turismo 4 ships in North America
The new real driving simulator finally hits the stores.
Tuesday, February 22, 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that Gran Turismo 4, available exclusively for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, has shipped to stores in North America. The fourth installment of the series that sold more than 38 million copies worldwide promises to bring to PlayStation 2 one of the most detailed, true-to-life driving simulations to date. The European version should hit the stores on March 9th.
The new Gran Turismo includes more than 700 cars, 100 tracks (including dirt/snow courses, world circuits, original circuits from previous Gran Turismo games), and new modes like "B-Spec" and "Photo Mode" next to the classic "Gran Turismo Mode" and "Gran Turismo Arcade Mode". A complete listing of all cars and tracks can be found in the game's official website.
As usual, the game developed by Polyphony Digital aims at recreating a realistic experience incorporating real-life physics for each vehicle, taking into account variables like weight, speed, friction, wind, and more. According to the developers, the new Gran Turismo incorporates a more complex A.I. engine to allow for believable behavior from opponents that should make races less repetitive than in the past installment. Unfortunately, GT4 does not include an online mode, and this will probably penalize the game against other popular racing games. This said, GT4 includes a two-player mode and a multiplayer LAN mode for up to six players.
Both the two new modes take advantage of the game's outstanding graphics engine, so they are basically more advanced versions of the classic Replay Mode. The Photo Mode is divided in two formats: Photo Drive, where players can photograph their car during the race using effects like zoom, depth of field, and motion blur; Photo Travel, where players can take photos of their car in exotic locations and save them to their Memory Card or USB key. The B-spec mode is probably more intriguing; you take the role of a race team manager and provide direction to your A.I. controlled driver; this mode lets you adjust and create various car settings for proper race setup, plan pit stops, and choose the difficulty of a race.
