Star Wars fans, stop drooling please!

- LucasArts today unveiled new details about Star Wars Battlefront, the new action game that will let players play in many of the most memorable Star Wars battles, both offline and online. The game, developed by Pandemic Studios, should hit the stores on September 2004.

In Star Wars Battlefront players can choose among many different soldier types from four factions, drive into any vehicle, and use turrets to conquer the galaxy. The game seems even bigger than how it was described in this January's press release, with more vehicles and weapons available to the players.

Single player modes include "Instant Action," "Galactic Conquest" and the story-based "Historical Campaigns". In "Historical Campaigns" players will relive all the legendary battles of the series from Episode I to Episode VI, fighting from the perspective of four different factions. The game will offer 15 environments across 10 different planets, including Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, Kamino and Geonosis.

Online gaming will be the core of the game; console gamers can play against up to 16 players over the Internet or up to 32 players via LAN. PC players will be able to battle against up to 32 players on the Internet or via LAN. AI units will also populate the battlefield, and the game the game will support voice chat in all versions through compatible headsets.

There will be 20 different soldier units in the game, like standard infantry, scouts, heavy weapons and pilots, divided in four factions: Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Republic Clone Army, and Separatist Battle Droids. Each unit has specialized abilities and the possibility to use 30 different ground and air vehicles like the X-Wing, the speeder bike, the AT-ST, and even the Republic Gunship, able to hold up to 5 different soldiers. The game will also include 30 Star Wars weapons including blaster rifles, rocket launchers and thermal detonators, in addition to ground-based turret guns that can be manned and used to defend strategic command posts.

Controls will be completely customizable on all systems, and gamers will also be able to switch from first to third person view gameplay. In multiplayer offline play, the game will also feature a split-screen mode.

All Star Wars fans, especially those who can't afford to play the excellent Star Wars Galaxies, should be more than excited about Star Wars Battlefront.
