Spyro returning this fall
The cute dragon will have a new game this fall.
Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - Vivendi Universal Games today announced the development of Spyro: A Hero's Tail, a new game based on the purple dragon originally created by Insomniac Games. The new installment is being developed by UK-based Eurocom Entertainment Software and scripted by Emmy Award-winning writer J. Stewart Burns, and it will be released for Playstation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in Q4 2004. Following a trend seen in games like Jak III and Ratchet & Clank, it seems that also Vivendi decided to take the road of "platformers with a true storyline" - even if, from what we have read so far, the game sounds like another classic Spyro's adventure.
"Since his debut in 1998, our purple dragon Spyro has been a favorite character among console gamers everywhere," said Michael Pole, EVP of Worldwide Studios, VU Games. "Spyro fans are sure to welcome his greatest adventure to date - an adventure game that immerses players into a deep storyline, more diverse, lush environments and introduces a strong line-up of engaging characters."
Story
The Evil Red Dragon has scattered Dark Gems able to steal light all over to Dragon Realms, in an attempt to gain control of the world. Spyro, with the help of his friends, must travel the world and destroy all of the Dark Gems to save once again the Dragon Realms.
Gameplay
Interestingly, this dark/light theme will be fundamental throughout the game. While traveling across the lands of the Dragon Realms, Spyro will have to fight through environments that shift from evil to good in real-time. Everything - enemies, lighting, objects, sky, and music - will be transformed in front of the eyes of the player. Spyro will have his breath attacks to contrast his enemies: the Flame Breath will burn them, the Freeze Breath will freeze them, the Water Breath will obstruct them, and the Electric Breath will be necessary to destroy mechanical opponents. Other playable characters will be Hunter the Cheetah, Sgt. Byrd, Spyro's personal Dragonfly, Sparx, or Blink the Mole.
