Game based on the movie to arrive this Spring.

- Vivendi Universal Games announced today that it will release Van Helsing for the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox, based on the film from Universal Pictures written and directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns). The movie draws inspiration from the studio's classic horror B-movies and introduces the character of Van Helsing, Bram Stoker's vampire hunter, in a mission to fight evil in a distant Eastern European land.

The game, developed by Saffire Studios, will be releases in Spring 2004 and puts the players in the role of Van Helsing, in a third person action adventure against monsters like Dracula, Wolf Man, and Frankenstein Creature. The developers of the game worked closely with the members of the movie production, in order to allow players to explore areas they've seen in the movie and to have also access to a backstory that they will not get in theatres.

Players will be able to use an arsenal of melee and ranged weapons including tojo blades, scimitars, pistols, a shotgun and a hand-cranked gatling gun. Van Helsing can also use his grappling hook to explore the game world, unleash special attacks, and escape from danger.

"Van Helsing builds on the legacy of Universal's monster franchise, while bringing a new, dark hero simultaneously to movie and video game screens," said Bill Kispert, vice president, Interactive, Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "The haunting world created by the filmmakers, and the interpretation of these legendary characters as we have never seen them before, offers a fantastic jumping off point to develop an emotional and atmospheric action game experience."
