Star Wars meets Battlefield 1942 - exciting is the right word here.

- LucasArts officially announced today Star Wars Battlefront, a multiplayer open-ended action game set in the Star Wars universe. The game, scheduled for a fall 2004 release for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC, is developed by Pandemic Studios.

Apparently, the game looks like Battlefield 1942 set into the Star Wars universe; in fact, players will be able to participate in many of the most memorable Star Wars battles, set in over 15 vast environments across 10 different planets, including Hoth, Genosis, Yavin, Tatooine, and Naboo. Instead than playing as the saga's main heroes - a battle with 32 Han Solo would surely look strange - players will take the role of soldiers from four factions: Rebel Alliance, Imperial Army, Clone Army, and Droid Army. Players can customize the abilities of their soldiers and can use ground based turrets and drive more than 15 diverse ground and air vehicles including the X-wing, speeder bike, and the AT-ST.

While this is enough to make everybody drool, LucasArts also announced that the game will be fully optimize for PS2 online, Xbox Live, and PC Online. Anyhow, while PC players will be able to battle against up to 32 players over the Internet or 64 via a LAN, console gamers will be able to battle against "only" 16 players over the Internet or 32 players via a LAN.

Star Wars Battlefront will also offer a single-player mode, plus a unique "Conquest" mode that, after each battle, will reward the winning team with a special "bonus" ability to be used in future battles to conquer the Star Wars galaxy planet-by-planet.
