SCEA and Polyphony unveiled new details about Gran Turismo 4. 500 cars, 100 courses, and more in the news article!
Thursday, May 15, 2003 - Sony Computer Entertainment announced today the release of Gran Turismo 4 for the Playstation 2, scheduled for a Winter 2003-2004 release. The game, developed by Polyphony Digital, uses an all-new physics engine to offer perfect real-life physics; more cars, courses and race modes, plus online gameplay, will make of Gran Turismo 4 a bigger game than its amazing predecessor.
"In Gran Turismo 4, automotive racing is much more than a sport, it is a lifestyle as we take advantage of the highly successful game mechanics of its predecessor and present an even more, in-depth racing experience with all new features," said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Due to its cutting-edge technology, enhanced online mode and worldwide anticipation, we are confident that Gran Turismo 4 will meet the demand of our fans and automotive enthusiasts while reaching out to new PlayStation 2 users."
The graphic engine has been enhanced in many ways; “new technology blends real-time action with a photo-fixed background to immerse the player in real-life environments such as New York City, the Grand Canyon and others” revealed SCEA in the official press release. “Highly detailed vehicles and environment mapping create broadcast-quality graphics, from light and competitor car reflections on the player's automobile to leaves on a tree shaking in the wind.”
Announced game features include:
It also seems that the new Gran Turismo will feature enhanced opponent A.I.; in fact, if there was a fault in the previous instalment was the rather predictable behavior of the opponents. On a note, no announcements were made about real-time damage on vehicles, a feature that many fans are expecting from the series.
