PlayStation 2 Fantasy

Graphics : 7.5

The Ps2 port of the Ratbag Difference Engine is smooth, fast, and able to render 24 cars simultaneously on screen. The game is locked at 60fps, and the result is a great sense of speed that few other titles can offer.

The details in the environments are nothing impressive, and even if the quality of the textures is good, the overall result is a game that doesn't surprise for its visuals. On the other hand, the possibility to race at different times of the day and the good lighting effects add realism to the game.

The car models look great. They are finely detailed, magnificently textured, and the realistic real-time damages on their bodies are something that I would like to see in more racing titles. Sometimes, you'll see six or more cars crashing the one against the other, and the result is a mayhem that's simply exciting.

Sound : 6.5

There is only one theme in the game, a boring guitar and bass riff repeated continuously, played in the menu, and it's completely forgettable. The sound effects are decent; the rumbling of the engines is great and powerful, crowd sounds and crash sounds are in the average. The game features directional sounds; this means that playing with a good TV or stereo system you'll hear the sounds of cars and crowd coming from different directions.

The game offers a wealth of game modes, including a Career Mode that's really addictive, and that could keep fans of the racing genre glued to the screen for weeks. There is also the possibility to play the game in split-screen against a friend, and that's always good when it comes to replay value.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 7.5

Ratbag's game is a great simulation of Sprint Cars racing. It's an addictive, well-developed, extremely detailed game, characterized by a fast graphic engine and a good replay value. The game is quite difficult, and it doesn't offer the visuals of other racing titles available on the system, but fans of racing games will love it, also considering the low retail price (30$). And if you are into Sprint Cars racing, I think this game is a must have in your collection.
