Graphics : 8.0

Unreal Tournament for Ps2 doesn’t reach the graphic quality of the Pc version running on a high-end machine, but it bears well the comparison.

The graphic engine runs smoothly at 30fps in high resolution and even though it doesn’t come close to the speed of TimeSplitters, it succeeds in sustaining the rhythm of the action without any sort of flickering or aliasing issues. The environments have a quality comparable to the ones featured in the Pc version; they are extremely rich and original, even if the textures are not as detailed as in the original game; it's evident the developers had some problem porting the PC engine to the Playstation 2. During the game you’ll find yourself playing on board of a space ship or into a mysterious Gothic environment, and you’ll see the red planet, Mars. Good light effects enrich each area adding a good dose of realism.

With a longer period of development, I’m pretty sure this game would have looked like the Pc version. The Ps2’s internal structure is very different from the one of a normal PC and this has probably forced the developers to completely revise their work for this new version. Anyhow, Epic’s job can surely be appreciated. Unreal Tournament for Ps2 have all the elements to fascinate an enthusiast of the genre.

Sound : 7.0

Techno, fast-paced music will be the soundtrack for your adventures in this game, but what you will mostly notice are the sound effects of the various weapons. Overall the sound quality of this new version is better than in the PC version, even though the effect is always the same: a triumph of chaos that pushes the player to become more and more aggressive. A soundtrack with a lot of rhythm and little brain is a feature that many fps have in common. We are far from the quality of the music featured in other Ps2 games, but if you like the genre Unreal Tournament will not disappoint you.

Even if Unreal Tournament hasn't a map editor, there are 50 imaginative levels to test your skills with and the AI of the enemies is excellent, thus creating a perfect single player experience. Anyhow, the multiplayer mode is still the best way to fully enjoy this game. Playing together with three other friends is really exciting. Overall, a game that’s worth its price.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 8.0

Unreal Tournament is a good Ps2 game, and has a better single player mode than Free Radical’s TimeSplitters. If you are keen on first person shooters this is definitely the game to buy. On the other hand, if you have always hated this genre neither Unreal Tournament nor TimeSplitters will succeed in changing your mind.

I’d like to see a first person shooter a bit more human; the characters in UT, also when they are controlled by your best friend or your girlfriend, look just like murderous machines. I can’t stand moralizing and I don’t want to seem a censor. A thing is a game and another is reality. I’m simply saying that a wave of novelty would be the right thing for this genre of games on console. Anyhow, if you have read all this review, it means you want a solid, fast paced, amusing game. Well, UT will not disappoint you.
