The team of artists at SCEA San Diego designed a breathing fantasy world, with influences coming from the Polynesian style, the temples of Angkor wat in Cambodia, and reminiscent in some way of the vigorous epic style of movies like Conan The Barbarian.
The look is the one of the last generation of Disney movies, with a rich palette of colors and a strong stylization in the design of characters and environments. This cartoonish style clashes with the violence and the blood of the battles: Rau kills his opponents in any possible way, with a range of moves that varies from the everlasting classic, the impalement, to sanguinary decapitations. The result is an explosive mix of painted look and crude violence that gives The Mark Of Kri an unmistakable visual temper.
The character models are built with an adequate number of polygons for their stylized look, and the textures are good, but a more impressive work was done with the animations, entirely hand-drawn by the talented artists who worked on the game. The list of different moves that Rau performs in-game seems endless, and the same care was used for non playable characters and creatures.
There are aliasing problems in certain areas of the vast levels, but overall the environments recreate with a wealth of details and beautiful lighting effects luxuriant jungles, forests, ancient ruins and fortresses. Other graphic refinements are used throughout the game. For example, when you look through the eyes of Kuzo, the image is distorted with a filter that simulate the view through the eyes of a bird; motion-blur effects are used to give more emphasis to movements of characters and creatures.
