PlayStation 2 Fantasy

Graphics : 9.0

Graphically, this game is a wonder. EA Sports’ Canadian developers have merged an uproarious gameplay and magnificent graphics. First of all, the characters are all built with thousands of polygons. The faces are very detailed and thanks to the weird haircut they give the characters an amusing cartoonish style. The costumes (4 for each character) that you can choose are all worthy of a Sci-fi game. The animations during the tricks are absolutely smooth, and they will surprise all those who have been sceptical about the power of the new console. But what really shines in SSX are the unbelievable environments created by EA’s artists. EA Sports is well-known for the great care for environmental details in its sports titiles. Fifa 2001, Madden Nfl 2001 are just two example of the great work done by this software house with many of Ps2 launch games. Each of the eight tracks is completely different from all the others and it will really project you in a new gaming experience. The effects of lights and the dynamic camera will literally take your breath away.

Both the environments and the characters are completely free of any defect. You can forget the words aliasing and flickering while you’re playing with SSX. This is definitely the game that will show your friends the power of your new console.

Sound : 9.0

EA sports has always been regardless of expenses when it comes to give a game like SSX a good soundtrack. The music fits perfectly the hip hop style of SSX’s characters. Beastie Boys’Mix Master Mike and other artists have created nice music that exalt the pace of your races. Titles like Speed Freak, Top Bomb, Destroy the Competition, surely can tell you something of the songs in SSX. Many of these tracks have all the usual Beastie Boys’ irony and others, like Himalaya, are indeed splendid. Considering the importance of this market to reach a large and young audience, it’s evident that in the next future more and more bands will write music for videogames.
The songs featured in SSX concretely interact with your on-screen action. If you find yourself in the last positions during the competition, many of the instruments will drop out. Only after you’ve gained the first position you are able to hear the song in all its fullness. Besides, during the jumps the music will completely drop out, to start again after you’ve successfully landed. Jump……… silence……. Go!!!

The gameplay mode are just a few and there are only eight different characters. However, the tracks featured in this game have the greatness of a fantasy environment and the number of tricks and hidden passages is unbelieveable. This is really one of the deepest sports games ever realized, one of those titles that are completely worth their prices.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 9.0

EA's developers have completely reinvented a genre with SSX.
Among the Ps2 launch titles there is another excellent snowboarding game, Konami's ESPN Winter X Games Snowboarder. This a solid, classic title, much more realistic than SSX.
Anyhow, I strongly prefer this EA Sports' title. It's something new, innovative, and with an incredible, sane, fast paced rhythm. Definitely a must buy game for all Ps2's owners. Or at least, if you really hate sports games, do yourself and your friends a favour, rent this game.
