PlayStation 2 Fantasy

Graphics : 9.0

In general the game is not difficult, and apart from events, it’s not so various. Anyway, every race is kinda funny, thanks to the madness of Acme events and also thanks to the presence of Looney Tunes characters.
It’s a shame that the creators of this title didn’t put in Space Race a great amount of different characters from the cartoon show: some of them, even the most famous ones like Road Runner or Speedy Gonzales, are missing and others are not playable, even when unlocked, like the Granny or Taz. Adding to this, both playable and non-playable characters are not varied: differences are mainly focused on physical appearence of every character, but not on personal abilities and skills. So, if you really like one of Looney Tunes characters you will probably find great being able to use it, but if you are looking for peculiar characteristics, you won’t be happy for developers choice. Another issue is the long loading times before every race get started, but this is a constant of the genre.

Sound : 8.0

Graphics surely represent the best aspect of this title. Both characters and environments are detailed and loyal to the original from the cartoon show. Let’s say something more: animations of characters and gags are simply great, and the whole atmosphere is perfect for the genre of the game. Two years after the release of the game on Dreamcast, the cell-shading technique used by Melbourne House is still impressive. Space Race worlds are bright and colorful according to Warner Bros style, and you will be amused by all the ironic stuff developers placed here and there all along the tracks.

Space Race is not a long game, at least not as much as other racers. But for sure you won’t be bored from the beginning, thanks to medium difficulty of the game, which allows also not skilled players to get started and have fun winning the easier races. On the other hand, very expert players won’t be attracted by a certain repetitiveness, and the lack of control on some aspects of your character will bother someone. Probably the game will be more attractive for a younger audience. It will take some time to unlock all the additional items, tracks and events. This means you won’t get tired of this game soon.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 8.0

Infogrames created a very nice product, especially good for the brightness and the fanciful atmosphere. Even if this game is not completely original, lovers of the genre, especially young players, will be amazed by astonishing graphics, unexpected events and funny gags. A must buy for Looney Tunes fans and also for those who love kart games. A good rent for the others, especially if you need something amusing to spend your time.

Special thanks to Shaun Sandy at Infogrames
