PlayStation 2 Fantasy

Graphics : 4.0

The developers used the cel-shading technique to recreate the look and the style of the comic books, but the result is far away from the visual beauty of a game like Sly Cooper.

The backgrounds are poorly realized, built with few polygons and badly textured. The game uses a small percentage of the console's capabilities, yet the graphic engine has plenty of problems in rendering the dull game world. Clipping issues, slowdowns, and draw in problems are continuous, and that's not acceptable in this generation of video games, especially when you are in front of such simplistic visuals.

The artworks of the talented Italian artists are the only good thing that partially saves the quality of the graphics. The cel-shaded character models, while far from those seen in other games using this technique, look fine. PK is also animated decently, and it's quite funny seeing the masked duck jumping around the levels.

Sound : 2.0

The soundtrack is repetitive, made of generic themes that seem robbed from a low-quality collection of techno songs for children. Sound effects are equally generic, and the only good thing is the possibility to choose between Italian, French and English dialogues. Unfortunately, whether your preference is, the voice acting is always boring and/or irritating.

Eleven levels are not a big deal, even if you consider the low retail price of the game, but the real problem is the lack of any real incentive to play Disney's PK again once you've finished it.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 4.0

You won't believe that, but I was expecting something more from a game based on Paperink's adventures. PK is a cool character, and I literally grew up reading the comic books created by the Italian artists. The gameplay offers a straightforward old-style platforming experience, the graphics don't make any justice to the artworks, and the soundtrack is just awful.

The game retails for just $19.99 but trust me, if you want to know something more about PK, you'd better spend your money to import some comic book from Italy. You'll love those stories, even if you aren't a child.
