Graphics : 5.5

Graphics are the weakest aspect of this game. Maybe the efforts of the developers were not focused on creating a visually impressive game, but something more could have been done to make of Mister Mosquito a better looking title. The movements of the members of Yamada’s family, also elementary ones like walking around the room, are too much robotic and not natural at all, and this can be annoying to see. Their facial expressions are kind of static and this doesn’t make them look very realistic. The 3D environments are plain and functional, but somewhat too much simple. The interaction you have with some object make the whole setting to gain some points, but not enough.

On the other hand, the little mosquito is a really cute character. Mr. Mosquito it’s a small, roly-poly creature with big eyes and shiny wings, and it’s animated with great care.

Sound : 7.0

The sound fits the game pretty well, even if both music and voice acting are not so brilliant. I’d say they’re unbearable in some parts: especially during the Battle Mode the human cries are particularly dumb and silly. Their dialogues are also expression of the banality of their everyday relationships. The narrator’s voice, which introduces the whole game and comes back for each level, is also blank as the one used in a documentary. Talking about the music, in general it is a bit cheesy, but perfect to underline certain situations. Also, sound effects are suitable for this game and go along with the realistic and funny atmosphere. This is probably an interesting choice of the authors, to underline the comical nature of the humans and their lives. There are resemblances with some Japanese crazy movies with weird gags, that Western people cannot fully understand…

The game is short and there aren’t many things left once you have finished it, apart from getting new colors for your mosquito and performing an higher score. Even if this game is not a long one, it’s amusing, so you probably won’t regret the time passed draining blood during the hot Yamada’s summer. The game also includes a little 2 players mini-game that can be unlocked using a cheat (just rotate clockwise the right analog stick 30 times at the title screen), and the possibility to play an extra summer (you have to fill all 16 Extra Tanks).

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 7.0

Despite many technical limitations, this game has the merit of being really different from the ones we are used to know and play. The silliness of the characters doesn’t mean the game itself is pointless. In fact playing Mister Mosquito is funny and you won’t be much annoyed, even if you don’t particularly like arcade games. Besides, Mister Mosquito gives a different perspective on our everyday life: through the eyes of a little mosquito, our actions appear comic, senseless, and cruel.

Definitely a good choice for the ones who are looking for originality and easy amusement in the same product. It’s worth playing also for curious players: if they don’t want to buy Mister Mosquito because they’re not sure they like this type of game (I admit some people could hate it for the excessive silliness of it all), at least they can go for a rent and have some hours of fun.
