Surviving in the jungle
The military rations which players have come to know and love (especially when low on health) are no longer in the game. Instead, they will have to keep up Snake's stamina by feeding him the jungle wildlife. Animals and fruits provide various amounts of stamina recovery and some can be caught easily while others may need some work. After killing/cutting a food item, it will give a puff of smoke and transform into a food ration which Snake can pick up. A list of the foods in the demo:
- Reticulated Python: Medium recovery and are found frequently. Easy to catch but can bite if the player is not careful. Can be used as food or guard distraction.
- Siberian Ink Cap: A mushroom which contains an ink sack. It provides a small recovery and is easy to find using Thermal-Goggles.
- Russian Oyster Mushroom: A flat and round mushroom which is found on fallen logs and trees. Small recovery and found with Thermal-Goggles.
- Giant Anaconda: This snake is found in one part of the demo and it's the only one. Large recovery.
- Magpie: The only bird in the demo and found in trees. Need to use the Sniper Rifle for accurate shot. Medium recovery.
- Hornet's Nest: This can be used to distract or draw away guards if sniped at a distance. The hornets surround whoever picks it up. It provides a medium recovery.
- Indian Gavial: An alligator which doesn't hesitate to attack as it's been subjected to human experiments and has violent behavior as a result. Only way to kill it is with the shotgun and it provides three separated rations, all medium recovery.
- Tree Frog: Very small and hard to see. It's best to use the Thermal-Goggles to find them and they provide a small recovery.
- Rat: These are found in the crawlspace under the base where Solokov is kept. Since Snake is crawling, the knife is the weapon to use. There are a lot of them, but they provide a very small recovery.
- Golova: A pear-like fruit which are found on the grounds and the trees. Medium recovery.
- Yabloko Moloko: They resemble apples but there are only two of them in a tree in the Dolinovodno area you come across. Small recovery.
In order to apply the foods to real life terms, Kojima has decided to make the wildlife rot over time in the player's inventory. If Snake shoots or cuts the animal, it will eventually rot away and become inedible. However, if they are tranquilized, they can be preserved for a longer amount of time and can be eaten much later. Snake also expresses his like and dislike for the foods he's fed; a mumble if he doesn't like it and a extreme happiness if he does. Apparently, in the real game, if the player constantly feeds him a food he dislikes, he may grow to like it. It appears Snake will be constantly evolving.

The final new feature is the Stamina bar which is placed right beneath the Life bar. This is what players will be constantly checking since it shows how much stamina Snake has. Stamina is affected by being out in the jungle too long and using the "Stalking" move (which takes away a lot of it). Not feeding Snake will cause the bar to decrease and his stomach to growl alerting nearby guards. He also becomes physically weaker and it shows in the Survival View; he will be slightly hunched over with a weary expression on his face. Feeding Snake with foods will replenish his stamina and he will heal faster depending on the bar. In the final version, if players save their game while having a low stamina and come back to it a few days later, the game will realize a few days have gone by. Snake would've "slept" in the meantime and his stamina will be full when the player re-loads their game.
The playable demo is already in top-quality which can only mean the final game will be absolutely stunning. Let's just hope it lives up to the expectations of gamers everywhere. Knowing Kojima, it probably will.
