PlayStation 2 Fantasy

Graphics : 6.5

Characters in Evergrace look nice; they are built with an elevated number of polygons, with faces that are expressive and finely animated. Body movements, on the other hand, lack the smoothness reached in other PS2 titles. Another element developed with great care is the dress-up and equipment system which, for the joy and the fun of the player, allows the characters to really wear the objects you will find during your explorations.

The environments are repetitive, unrealistic, more similar to the ones seen on PsOne games than to what many expect to see on a game designed for a new console. For example, trees and other natural elements are rough and blocky, rooms look empty and lifeless, and textures are often too blurry for a PS2 game. On the other hand, the beautiful skies and the unique palette, full of autumnal colors that make the game immediately recognizable, are proofs that had it not been developed in a hurry, Evergrace could have become one of the finest looking PS2 launch titles.

Annoying slowdowns are another serious issue, in particular during battles.

Sound : 6.5

Voice acting is fairly good in Evergrace, and dialogues are quite enjoyable. Music fits well the fantasy atmosphere of the game, with a few catchy themes played throughout the game, even if it doesn't reach the level of the wonderful soundtrack of another launch RPG for PS2: Summoner.

The unique dress-up system, together with the high degree of customization offered to the player, could make hardcore fans of RPGs play this game for a while. Unfortunately, the bad battle system and the lack of variety in the game world can easily dishearten casual players or players used to play only high profile console RPGs like Final Fantasy games.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 6.5

Evergrace lacks the flashy graphics, the great soundtrack, and even the complex game mechanics that have characterized some of the most successful RPGs for PSOne. The game has its strong points - the unique dress-up system, customizable weapons - but is this enough to make you forget the game's many limits?

Lack of variety is Evergrace's most evident flaw. The battle system is dull, environments are beautiful but repetitive, explorations are not as fun as one would like them to be in a true RPG adventure.

Still an enjoyable experience for those seeking a simplistic RPG in this early period of the life of the PS2, Evergrace is probably more suited to hardcore RPG fans than to casual players.
