Graphics : 7.0

The graphic engine of Eve Of Extinction always runs smoothly, but there are many clipping issues and rare aliasing problems in the environments.

The character models are the best element in the graphics of Eve Of Extinction. While the most common enemies are a bit uninspired, the characters of the game are in general well designed. The 3d models are built with a good number of polygons, and the graphic engine handles without any slowdown more than 6 characters simultaneously on screen. The bosses you’ll encounter in the game are extremely convincing, and great care was used realizing the female characters.

Many environments in the game are definitely impressive and very polished. You’ll fight in many different places: in the streets of the city, in Chinatown, in a secret base, on the roof of a train and many more I don’t wont to spoil for you. The quality of the textures varies from environment to environment, from cheap and blurry ones to others that are very well crafted. Occasionally, there are minor aliasing issues, but clipping problems are more frequent. Every time you approach a wall, your weapon seems to disappear into it.

Light and particle effects are good, and many Legacy Drive attacks are quite impressive. The rod literally generates a “rain of lightning” that kills all the enemies in the surroundings. Shadows are created in real time by the engine of the game, but they are not always convincing. Sometimes, when you are approaching the border of a crate or a wall you have jumped onto, you can see your own shadow projected in mid-air. That looks quite odd, believe me.

Overall, the graphics of Eve Of Extinction are decent, but there are many problems that could have probably been fixed with some additional work.

Sound : 7.0

The background music of Eve Of Extinction mainly consists in a series of generic and repetitive techno songs that occasionally, like in the Chinatown level, fit the environments; sometimes there is no music at all in the background. Sound effects are good, especially the ones that can be heard during the battles. The dialogues are not very frequent in Eve Of Extinction, but they are always well acted. Adding to that, the voice actors are perfect for their characters.

Eve Of Extinction is a bit longer than the average Beat’Em Up game. You’ll need five hours to successfully complete the game the first time in the main mode and there are also hidden game modes like Survival that can be unlocked. Considering that the only Beat’em Up title on Playstation 2, The Bouncer, has no more than 2 hours of actual gameplay, that’s not a bad value. If you love arcade games, you’ll probably play this title over and over again.

Overall Score ( not an average ) : 7.0

The game concept behind Eve Of Extinction is fairly original. Unfortunately, all the elements that could have made of this title a unique beat’em up game – the use of weapons to solve puzzles, the first person mode, a greater focus on the story (like in Berserk) – have not been developed enough.

Anyhow, Eve Of Extinction is a solid arcade experience. The controls are intuitive, the weapon system is addictive - I’d suggest this title to all the ones looking for a straightforward beat’em up game for their Playstation 2. But if you are looking for a long and complex adventure, this isn’t the game for you.
