E3 2005: Heavenly Sword goes to PlayStation 3
Ninja Theory's "Xbox Next" project becomes a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

- Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Ninja Theory announced an exclusive development and publishing agreement that will bring Ninja Theory's new game, Heavenly Sword, to PlayStation 3. Originally, the game was announced as an "Xbox Next" project.

Described as a "stunningly beautiful martial arts drama set in a mythical time and place in the Far East", Heavenly Sword will take inspiration from the best martial arts movies to create new free-style combat system. Players will be able to switch between different sword types and other weapons on the fly, destroying enemies but also the interactive 3D environments. Apparently, the colorful creativity seen in some of the most interesting Hong-Kong and Asian martial arts movies will be present in Heavenly Sword. Players will be able to fight in the clouds, over water, though treetops, and more.

The new AI system under development at Ninja Theory should theoretically bring players a new fighting experience. Enemies will be able to attack players one-on-one or employ complex squad based tactics in groups of several dozens or even in battalions of several thousands, according to Ninja Theory.

Development on the game is already in an advanced state, since Ninja Theory has been working on the project for about two years now.

"We are committed to inspiring the best creative talent in the industry to create software for the PLAYSTATION 3 platform", said Phil Harrison, Executive Vice President, Development, SCEE. "Ninja Theory has demonstrated world-class creativity, unrestricted ambition and technical ability with their early work on Heavenly Sword. We are delighted to be working with a developer and creator who wants to challenge conventions and deliver the impossible."

"With SCEE as our publisher, we are well positioned to craft Heavenly Sword into an uncompromising next-generation experience", said Nina Kristensen, Co-Founder and Chief Development Ninja at Ninja Theory, "The game is already beautiful, the combat is unlike anything out there, having been refined over two years, and the storyline is gut-wrenchingly powerful. I can't wait for people to experience what we have created."
