PlayStation 2 gets new look
Sony to release a new version of the PlayStation 2 this November.
Tuesday, September 21, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment today announced the company will be releasing a new version of the PlayStation 2 this November. Coded SCPH-70000 CB, the new model will be in stores on November 3 in Japan, and by November 1st in North America.
The new PlayStation 2 has obviously the same basic functions of the classic model, but the internal architecture has been redesigned and optimized, so that Sony was able to reduce the internal volume by 75 percent; if the current model has a thickness of 7.8 cm, the new model has been trimmed down to just 2.8 cm.
"Its size is almost as small as a hardcover book, making it easier to carry around and enjoy games and DVD videos anytime, anywhere" announced Sony.
The new PlayStation 2 comes equipped with an integrated Ethernet port for Network gaming. While the European model will include just an Ethernet port - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe didn't care too much about dial-up users from the very beginning, having released a Network Adaptor only for broadband users - the North American version will include also an internal modem. According to Sony 40% of North American PlayStation 2 online gamers use dial-up connections.
"The introduction of the new PlayStation 2 is part of our long-term vision for the platform," said Jack Tretton, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We are pleased to bring the sleek, redesigned product to market in time for the holiday season, and expect consumer enthusiasm for the new model to translate into robust sales. As the market leader, with an existing installed base of more than 27 million PlayStation 2 units in North America alone, we will continue to provide solutions that expand our consumer base and grow the category as a whole."
The only announced peripherals are a new version of the Multitap - the multitap for the classic PlayStation 2 is not compatible with the new version of the console - and a new vertical stand.
The new PlayStation 2 will retail for 1,500 Yen in Japan, 149.99$ in North America, and 149 Euros in Europe.
