Sony to unveil the PS3 in 2005
The new PlayStation 3 will be unveiled at next year's E3.
Monday, July 12, 2004 - Sony today announced at a PSP event in Japan that the company will unveil a playable version of the new PS3 console at E3 2005, the annual video-game trade show scheduled to take place from May 18 to 20 in Los Angeles.
"There has been some talk that development is not going well, but we expect to have a playable version at E3. We are pushing ahead with that schedule in mind," Kutaragi told a meeting of developers and media.
Kutaragi did not talk about a launch date for the new console, but Sony officials said the new console might follow a similar timetable to market as the PlayStation 2, which was released one year after it was first displayed. Industry analysts believe that Sony will most probably release the console in 2006.
After Sony announcement, it seems evident the next E3 could be the launchpad for the next-generation consoles. More than one month ago, Nintendo announced the company would unveil its new next-generation console - called "Revolution" - at E3 2005. With all this pressure coming from its direct competitors, it's not difficult to expect a similar announcement coming from Microsoft regarding the Xbox Next.
Of course, since the event was supposed to be focused on the PSP, Kutaragi also talked about Sony's upcoming portable console, saying that "We've come to the point when there is a PlayStation for almost every television. It's our dream for there to be a PSP for every person". The PSP is scheduled for a late 2004 release in Japan and a before March 31st, 2005 release in North America and Europe.
