E3 2004: Major Labels interested in music-based UMD Disc
PSP's Universal Media Disc could facilitate release of audio albums with special features for PSP players.
Tuesday, May 11, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment's announcement of the music-based Universal Media Disc (UMD), a format which is used in PSP players, has already garnered interest among major music companies. UMD will enable music companies to release full-length albums featuring audio content, innovative video footage, and other compelling programming. The format can also be used for full-length concerts and music video compilations.
"By combining the worlds of music and video in a single disc, this new initiative will provide artists with exciting new ways of connecting with their fans, as well as with additional opportunities for creative expression," commented Philip Wiser, Chief Technology Officer, Sony Music Entertainment.
