E3 2004: Major Labels interested in music-based UMD Disc
PSP's Universal Media Disc could facilitate release of audio albums with special features for PSP players.
Tuesday, May 11, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment's announcement of the music-based Universal Media Disc (UMD), a format which is used in PSP players, has already garnered interest among major music companies. UMD will enable music companies to release full-length albums featuring audio content, innovative video footage, and other compelling programming. The format can also be used for full-length concerts and music video compilations.
"By combining the worlds of music and video in a single disc, this new initiative will provide artists with exciting new ways of connecting with their fans, as well as with additional opportunities for creative expression," commented Philip Wiser, Chief Technology Officer, Sony Music Entertainment. "We are delighted that Sony Computer Entertainment has recognized the
importance of music to the gaming community, and have agreed to work with music companies to provide artists with a wide array of new creative opportunities. Music and music video releases on UMD have the potential to provide both music and games consumers with dramatically expanded value."
"PSP offers consumers a rich, cutting-edge multimedia experience," said Kevin Gage, Vice President of Strategic Technology and New Media at Warner Music Group. "We are excited by the potential to offer consumers exciting, new music experiences on devices such as PSP."
"PSP has provided us with the perfect opportunity to combine music and music video into compelling new offerings that will highlight the strengths of both worlds," commented Masa Chatani, Chief Technology Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We look forward to working closely with the music community as we explore a broad array of creative options, and introduce new and exciting products to the marketplace."
