E3 2003: SCEA unveils new hardware
In a truly surprising press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment of America today announced their first handheld console and new Playstation 2 peripherals.
Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - Sony Computer Entertainment announced today at its E3 press conference a series of surprising initiatives “focused on hardware innovation, content, community, and market expansion to enhance the consumer experience and designed to lead the industry down the right path toward entertainment convergence.”
"With the battle for console supremacy decided, we are departing from the status quo in an effort to broaden the in-home entertainment market," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief operating officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "At the same time, we shoulder the responsibility of the gaming industry and continue to challenge developers and publishers
The "PSP": a new handheld console!
So far, the most surprising announcement from SCEA at the E3 regards a new handheld console in development, called “PSP”, and scheduled for a fourth quarter of 2004 release. The new handheld console will be way more powerful than any current handheld system; the unit will be more powerful than the Playstation, and will feature fully polygonal graphics on a 480x272 LCD screen, with 3D sounds, and a storage media called UMD, able to store 1.8GB (!!). We’ll get into more details about the PSP in a separate news article.
Hardware: Playstation 2 related
SCEA plans to introduce the EyeToy, a “USB camera that uses motion-tracking technology to project player images on-screen”. The camera will capture the player’s body movements and instantaneously transforming these images into on-screen interaction. This curious device will launch in October 2003 for a retail price of $39, and will include 12 unspecified mini-games.
The company also announced plans to launch a USB Headset that utilizes Voice Over Internet Protocol and voice recognition technologies for use with online and offline games for PlayStation 2. Sony Computer Entertainment America first party online titles that utilize USB Headset technology include: SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs, Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain, NFL GameDay 2004, NBA ShootOut 2004, and NCAA GameBreaker 2004. Many third part developers, including EA Sports and Sega Sports, will also take advantage of the unit that should launch in September for a suggested retail price of $29.99.
