Playstation 3 to be completed by the year 2005
It seems the development of the next Playstation has already begun. More details inside.
Tuesday, May 7, 2002 - According to Kyodo News, Sony Computer Entertainment has already begun the development of their next gaming console, targeted from completion in 2005. The new Playstation should be heavily focused on high-speed fiber optic Internet connectivity. This means that games, in the future, could run in great part without the use of discs.
In the latest Game Developers Conference, Shin'ichi Okamoto, chief technical officer for Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that research efforts for the PlayStation 3 are focusing on what is called "distributed computing". Basically, thanks to the fiber optic connectivity, thousands of networked computers will do the tasks now accomplished by the CPU of a gaming consoles. This will create a console with the power of 1000 Ps2 linked together, a result that would be impossible with hardware advances alone.
