Thursday, January 10, 2002 - Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that during the holidays the astounding number of 5.3 millions of consoles were sold worldwide.
In Japan, after the drop in the price of Playstation 2 the sales increased significantly. From November 26th to January 6th 1.100.000 units were sold in Japan - twice and half the number of units sold during the 2000-2001 holidays.
In North America, 2.500.000 million units were sold in the period that goes from thanksgiving to the end of December. In the week preceeding Christmas, 640,000 consoles were sold. The Xbox was able to sell 1.5 million units before the end of 2001 while the GameCube has sold 1.2 units in U.S. The Playstation 2 alone has sold more than the Xbox and GameCube's sales combined.
In Europe, in the months of November and December, 2.790.000 Playstation 2 and 790.000 PsOne were sold. In the week preceding Christmas, 500,000 units were sold in the countries using PAL systems (Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia).
Software sales had skyrocketed worldwide in the month of December. With 4,500 PsOne and Ps2 titles available in Japan, 1,400 in U.S. and 1,500 in Europe Sony Playstation and Sony Playstation 2 have offered the most varied choice to all the players in any part of the world.
